Was hat Sie dazu bewogen, eine Karriere in der Forschung und insbesondere in der Erforschung von Muskeldystrophie einzuschlagen?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ich habe mich schon immer f\u00fcr die Wissenschaft interessiert, seit ich denken kann. Im College las ich einen Artikel in der Zeitschrift Scientific American \u00fcber die Kreuzbr\u00fcckentheorie der Muskelkontraktion und war von der Idee fasziniert, dass der Muskel im Grunde eine molekulare Maschine ist. In meiner Doktorarbeit untersuchte ich Acetylcholinrezeptoren an der neuromuskul\u00e4ren Verbindung und entdeckte, dass die Anzahl der Acetylcholinrezeptoren an der neuromuskul\u00e4ren Verbindung bei Myasthenia gravis reduziert ist. Als Postdoc in Harvard war ich Stipendiat der Muskeldystrophievereinigung.<\/p>\n

Welche Themen studieren Sie?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Wir untersuchen das ANO5-Protein. ANO5-Mutationen sind die 4th<\/sup> h\u00e4ufigste \"Ursache\" f\u00fcr LGMD, aber es ist fast nichts dar\u00fcber bekannt, was ANO5 tut oder wie es funktioniert. Wir glauben, dass es an der Reparatur von Muskelmembranen beteiligt ist. Wir untersuchen dieses Problem auf zellul\u00e4rer und molekularer Ebene.<\/p>\n

Wie wird Ihre Arbeit den Patienten helfen? Ist sie eher wissenschaftlicher Natur oder k\u00f6nnte sie eine Behandlung f\u00fcr LGMD werden?<\/strong>s oder MD<\/strong>s im Allgemeinen?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wir glauben, dass das Verst\u00e4ndnis der grundlegenden Molekular- und Zellbiologie von ANO5 eine Voraussetzung f\u00fcr die Entwicklung von Therapien f\u00fcr diese Form von LGMD (2L) ist. Wir glauben auch, dass die Erkenntnisse, die wir \u00fcber die Reparatur der Muskelmembran gewinnen, neue Hinweise f\u00fcr die Therapie anderer LGMDs liefern werden.<\/p>\n

Was w\u00fcrden Sie Patienten und anderen an LGMD Interessierten gerne \u00fcber die Forschung (Ihre eigenen Projekte und \u00fcber das Gebiet im Allgemeinen) mitteilen?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Die Grundlagenforschung ist frustrierend langsam, weil wir von einem unbeschriebenen Blatt ausgehen und neue Instrumente entwickeln m\u00fcssen. Aber die Leute in meinem Labor sind engagiert, arbeiten 12 Stunden am Tag und h\u00f6ren selten auf, dar\u00fcber nachzudenken und sich Gedanken dar\u00fcber zu machen, wie wir die Fragen, die wir beantworten wollen, l\u00f6sen k\u00f6nnen. wir sch\u00e4tzen die Unterst\u00fctzung der Steuerzahler und Spender, die unsere Forschung finanzieren.<\/p>\n

Was inspiriert Sie, weiterhin in diesem Bereich zu arbeiten? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Ich habe eine zwanghafte Pers\u00f6nlichkeit und kann nicht ruhen, bis ich verstehe, wie die Dinge funktionieren. Ich bin inspiriert von den Menschen, die an diesen Krankheiten leiden, die ihre Mitpatienten unterst\u00fctzen und sich daf\u00fcr einsetzen, die LGMD-Gemeinschaft zu vereinen.<\/p>\n

Wie k\u00f6nnen Patienten Sie ermutigen und Ihre Arbeit unterst\u00fctzen?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0Eine gro\u00dfe H\u00fcrde in unserer Forschung ist der Zugang zu menschlichem Gewebe. Mit Hilfe von Maus- und Zellkulturmodellen k\u00f6nnen wir zwar eine Menge lernen, aber um die menschliche Krankheit zu verstehen, brauchen wir menschliches Gewebe.
