Doctor en Fisiolog\u00eda por la Universidad de Campinas (UNICAMP) en S\u00e3o Paulo (Brasil), tras lo cual realiz\u00f3 estudios posdoctorales en el Whitehead Institute del MIT, Cambridge-MA.<\/p>\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 le llev\u00f3 a dedicarse a la investigaci\u00f3n y, en particular, al estudio de la distrofia muscular?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Quer\u00eda ser cient\u00edfico desde que era peque\u00f1o. A lo largo de mi carrera, la principal motivaci\u00f3n ha sido el deseo de influir en la vida de las personas a trav\u00e9s de nuestra investigaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 temas est\u00e1 estudiando?<\/strong><\/p>\n

El principal tema de investigaci\u00f3n en nuestro laboratorio es el desarrollo de terapias basadas en c\u00e9lulas madre para las distrofias musculares, y esto incluye una mejor comprensi\u00f3n de la firma molecular de los progenitores miog\u00e9nicos derivados de c\u00e9lulas madre pluripotentes y las c\u00e9lulas madre injertadas, las se\u00f1ales que permiten que estas c\u00e9lulas se alojen en los m\u00fasculos enfermos tras el trasplante sist\u00e9mico y promuevan la regeneraci\u00f3n muscular, correcci\u00f3n g\u00e9nica de c\u00e9lulas madre pluripotentes inducidas (iPS) espec\u00edficas de pacientes con LGMD para evaluar el potencial de una terapia aut\u00f3loga basada en c\u00e9lulas madre, y estudios de optimizaci\u00f3n de la escalabilidad, fabricaci\u00f3n y seguridad de progenitores miog\u00e9nicos derivados de c\u00e9lulas madre pluripotentes para aplicaciones terap\u00e9uticas.<\/p>\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo ayudar\u00e1 su trabajo a los pacientes? \u00bfTiene un car\u00e1cter m\u00e1s cient\u00edfico o podr\u00eda convertirse en un tratamiento para LGMD o MD en general?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cuando comenzamos estos estudios en 2004, eran puramente ciencia b\u00e1sica, pero a medida que avanzamos en nuestra investigaci\u00f3n a lo largo de los a\u00f1os, sentimos que ahora estamos mucho m\u00e1s cerca de traducir este enfoque en un tratamiento potencial para la LGMD y otras MD. En 2017 mantuvimos una reuni\u00f3n con la FDA previa a la solicitud de autorizaci\u00f3n de comercializaci\u00f3n para alinear nuestros objetivos a corto y largo plazo.<\/p>\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 le gustar\u00eda que los pacientes y otras personas interesadas en la LGMD supieran sobre la investigaci\u00f3n (sus propios proyectos y sobre el campo en general)?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hay muchos obst\u00e1culos y muchas inc\u00f3gnitas en el camino para conseguir un nuevo tratamiento terap\u00e9utico para las pruebas de la DM, pero nuestro laboratorio y otros est\u00e1n trabajando sin miedo hacia este objetivo.<\/p>\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 le inspira a seguir trabajando en este campo? <\/strong><\/p>\n

La posibilidad de que nuestro trabajo marque una diferencia en la vida de los pacientes con DM.<\/p>\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo pueden los pacientes animarle y ayudarle en su trabajo?<\/strong><\/p>\n

La fuerza y la esperanza de los pacientes de MD nos animan constantemente. A lo largo de los a\u00f1os, los pacientes han contribuido a nuestra labor mediante la donaci\u00f3n de tejidos y el apoyo econ\u00f3mico, y les estamos muy agradecidos por su apoyo.<\/p>\n
